Let’s Meet at Vanke Design Commune!

As time goes by, Maker Faire Shenzhen has gone through 11 years. Since its launch in 2012, surprisingly, we have changed eight venues in total, from creative parks to university campuses. On the one hand, this means that our event has been expanding year by year, but on the other hand, we have to start from scratch and coordinate with various venue partners every year, which is quite stressful.

You might still remeber that, in 2019, we partnered with Vanke Design Commune and present MFSZ19 at this “maze park”. We were fortunate enough to meet a partner who made us determined to break the tradition of “changing venues every year”. In 2021, we planned to launch the MFSZ21 event at the Design Commune, but it got cancelled due to the pandemic. This year, we want to invite you to join us on this journey as we gather again at the Design Commune in November!

Vanke Cloud City Design Commune

Design Commune Aerial View

Vanke Cloud City Design Commune (hereinafter referred to as Design Commune) is located at the northern green corridor of Vanke Cloud City. It is positioned as a design cluster, serving as the creation unit for a provincial-level cultural and creative industry demonstration park in Guangdong Province.

The four major blocks of the design commune were designed by more than 10 top architects in the industry. The overall spatial experience is unique. By interweaving multiple horizontal planes, the entire park maintains relative independence and a quiet atmosphere, while also integrating with greenery to create a low-density, open courtyard-style, aerobic office space.

Details of Design Commune

Design Commune is committed to overturning the existing industry chain with a new model. While promoting industry restructuring and reshaping rules, it designs the future. With industrial clusters as its development strategy, it reconstructs a complete design industry, where enterprises can gather to realize equality, mutual assistance and growth, building a forward-looking highland for “design clusters”.

After several years of operation, the Design Commune is not just a design cluster, but has also reconstructed a complete design ecosystem that forms an industry foundation linking consumer design, space design, product design, spatial experience, and media in multiple dimensions. In 2019, the Design Commune was selected as a “municipal-level cultural and creative industry park” in Shenzhen.

MFSZ19 Flashback

As the organizer of the event, we put a lot of effort into finding the right venue. Not only do we need to ensure that the venue is suitable, but we also hope that it aligns with our values, which allows the maker community to have more cross-border communication and collaborations with the local communities.

In early 2017, Chaihuo Maker Space settled in the Design Commune. We hope to leverage the influence of Maker Faire to strengthen the collaborations between makers and the community in the Design Commune. Moreover, its operating concept of “aggregating the upstream and downstream of the design industry and promoting industry restructuring” coincides with our efforts to establish an international innovation platform for in-depth service industry upgrades.

With MFSZ19 successfully held in the Design Commnue, it become a natural thought to keep it at the same venue as it was last time. We hope that this year’s collaboration will further deepen the connection between the maker community and the local ecosystem.

As an annual event for domestic and overseas maker communities, Maker Faire Shenzhen has emerged as a key event connecting Shenzhen’s local hardware ecosystem with the global tech community since its launch in 2012. The event has attracted visitors from nearly 100 countries and regions, which is a cross-border festival with high participation from the international innovation community. It is also a platform for communication and collaboration between industries and makers.

MFSZ has focused on the cross-border integration of science and technology innovation with traditional industries. While showcasing the collaboration of maker communities, exploring the unlimited potential for innovation, it has also demonstrated the achievements of the maker community in practicing technology cross-border and applying innovation in vertical scenarios.

If we consider the events from 2012 to 2017 as our efforts to connect and promote the maker community, after 2017, we have started to focus more on how to integrate more industries with us and build a communication platform between the community and industries.

  • In 2017, we began to focus on professional makers, highlighting the efforts and attempts made by the professional maker community to promote industrial innovation through the Maker Pro section.
  • In 2018, MFSZ started to introduce professional audiences and invited enterprise teams from various industries to the event, attempting to establish a platform for dialogue between innovation and traditional industries.
  • In 2019, the event made an effort to attract professional audiences from various industries, bringing teams from 50 well-known enterprises and facilitating communication and connection with makers on site, resulting in nearly 1,000 potential cooperation opportunities.

Maker Faire Shenzhen 2023
November 11-12, 2023 (Weekend)
WHERE ARE THE MAKERS?

Over the past 12 years, the development trajectory of Maker Faire Shenzhen can be seen as a microcosm of the development of maker culture in China.

  • 2012: “Gathering Small Wisdom, Journeying through the Great Future” – This was the first Mini Maker Faire in China, with less than 1000 attendees, and was more like a gathering within a small circle. But we saw the infinite possibilities emerging from the maker community.
  • 2013: The slogan was absent, and the maker community was still small. In the OCT Creative Park, there were cross-disciplinary exchanges among different creative communities, silently laying the foundation for cultural output.
  • 2014: “Innovate with China” – the event was upgraded to the Featured level for the first time, with a significant increase in scale compared to previous years, and the beginning of professional independent forums. This year, makers began to enter the public’s view.
  • 2015: “Everyone is a Maker, what are you waiting for?” – This year’s Shenzhen International Maker Week became one of the largest Maker Faires in the world. This year, the concept of “maker” was elevated to a national level, and the trend of “mass innovation, mass entrepreneurship” swept across the country.
  • 2016: “My World, My Creation” – As the sub-venue of the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week, the event was held for the first time in the commercial center area, experiencing unpredictable weather from typhoons to scorching heat. Many makers succeeded in your entrepreneurial endeavors this year, but it seemed like there were even more failures. The hype around entrepreneurship shifted towards rationality.
  • 2017: “Makers, Go Pro” – The event took place at the university campus for the first time, focusing on Maker Pros and providing a platform for diverse innovators and makers to showcase themselves, presenting more possibilities for the growth path of makers to the entire community.
  • 2018: “Co-making in the City” – The main venue of Shenzhen International Maker Week, where individuals and groups with shared visions and values gathered to showcase stories, projects, and explorations of collaboration among different communities and people.
  • 2019: ” To the Heart of Community, To the Cluster of Industry” – The event was upgraded to the Maker Faire Shenzhen, attempting to attract professional audiences and focusing on pragmatic aspects such as solving the needs of industrial upgrading and co-developin. It aims to build a platform for innovation and industry dialogue and collaboration.

“Where Are The Makers?”

We’re excited to highlight what some of our veteran makers have been up to lately. After interviewing these experienced creators, we want to share their inspiring stories with the community.

These makers are like old friends who have watched Maker Faire Shenzhen grow over the years. How have they continued believing in their ideas? How are they using their creativity to make things that help industries innovate? We hope their stories provide some cool ideas and motivation.

Today, let’s meet the talented maker Takasu. He’s been eagerly awaiting Maker Faire Shenzhen 2023 and decided to write us a letter detailing his journey over the past few years.

Hey there, fellow makers! Today, I want to share with you my personal journey as a Japanese maker and open hardware enthusiast. My name is Takasu, and over the past ten years, I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in more than 140 maker events, making me one of the most experienced individuals in this exciting field. But what truly transformed my life was the decision to move to Shenzhen in 2018, where I have become a proud Shenzhenees.

One of the most remarkable aspects of my maker journey has been the co-founding of the Nico-Tech Shenzhen community with Jerald Fu. Comprised of tech enthusiasts from Japan and various other countries, we’ve built a community of over three thousand members on Facebook. Our journey began in 2014 at the Maker Faire Shenzhen, where I had the privilege of being a speaker representing our art collective. You can still find my talk on YouTube and read articles about that remarkable experience.

During the Maker Faire Shenzhen, I was captivated by the energy and innovation emanating from the city’s thriving maker industry. This led me to join the organizing team for the Maker Faire Shenzhen 2015, where I had the honor of inviting numerous brilliant makers from Japan and around the world to showcase their creations. Moreover, I organized an unforgettable event, the Japanese Otaku Style geek dance party known as AKIPARTY, right in front of the Tencent Headquarters at the A8 Music Hall.

Fast forward nine years, and Japanese makers have become an integral part of the Maker Faire Shenzhen. Year after year, our presence has grown exponentially, with more than 30 booths and over 100 participants representing the Japanese maker community. We have forged deep connections, shared knowledge, and celebrated our shared love for making. And let’s not forget the legendary beer party at Baishizhou, where we gather to toast to Shenzhen and the enduring spirit of making.

My love for Shenzhen extends beyond the maker events and parties. I have delved into researching hardware innovation in Shenzhen alongside esteemed friends like Bunnie Huang. Together, we explore the vast world of open-source hardware, immersing ourselves in the Shenzhen hardware ecosystem. This journey has led me to switch my career path from the art collective to joining Switch Science, an open-source hardware company. Now, I have the privilege of supporting Shenzhen-based hardware companies such as M5Stack, Elephant Robotics, and the renowned Seeed. Through these experiences, I’ve discovered not just a job but a true lifework, all rooted in the magic of Maker Faire.

Reflecting on the past ten years, I’ve come to realize that my story mirrors the very essence of Maker Faire Shenzhen itself. It’s a testament to the transformative power of the maker movement, capable of reshaping one’s professional career and entire life. But beyond that, it exemplifies the diversity and openness of the Shenzhen maker community. We come from different backgrounds, cultures, and areas of expertise, yet we come together to celebrate our shared love for making and innovation.

And now, as the anticipation builds, we Japanese makers eagerly await the upcoming Maker Faire Shenzhen 2023. We invite each and every one of you to join us, engage in lively conversations, share your stories, and, of course, raise a glass of beer with us. Let’s relive the magic, forge new connections, and celebrate the vibrant spirit of the Shenzhen maker community.

So mark your calendars, fellow makers! The countdown to the next chapter of Maker Faire Shenzhen has begun. Together, let’s continue to embrace the maker spirit, nurture diversity, and make Shenzhen a hub of creativity and innovation.

See you at Maker Faire Shenzhen 2023!

Cheers,

Takasu

Thanks for Takasu’s engaging stories. Would you like to experience the vibrant maker community and ignite your next solution or project idea? Join us at the Maker Faire Shenzhen on November 11-12 to connect with fellow makers and innovators. Our event offers an inspiring atmosphere to spark your creativity. We hope to see you there!
